FAQ
Frequently asked questions about our mosquito bollard
General questions
What's the difference between the METAL and WOOD models?
From a technical perspective, both models are identical! The Willo Wood trap stands out with its wooden casing. Both models include a lighting function.
- Willo Wood lights up on the front panel only
- Willo Metal lights up front and sides
Do I need a power source nearby to connect the trap?
Absolutely! To operate, the trap must be plugged into the mains. Make sure you have an accessible outlet where you plan to install it.
What preventive measures can be taken to complement the use of traps?
To maximize the effectiveness of your mosquito trap, it's essential to take preventive measures before using it. These measures are designed to prevent the development of larvae in your garden:
- Eliminate sources of stagnant water by regularly emptying plant dishes and checking areas likely to retain water, such as your patio.
- Maintain your garden regularly, picking up leaves from under trees and fallen fruit, as mosquitoes feed on nectar/sugar.
- Clean your eavestroughs at least once a year in the spring, to prevent water build-up.
- Cover your rainwater tanks with mosquito nets or equivalent devices.
- Encourage biodiversity by introducing fish and frogs into decorative ponds and fountains.
- Make sure your pool water is always clear.
By adopting these preventive practices, you can make an effective contribution to reducing the presence of mosquitoes outdoors.
Is the anti-mosquito device environmentally friendly?
Yes, the trap uses biomimicry to mimic human presence. It emits a small amount of CO2, equivalent to our breathing, and also diffuses a scented attractant that imitates our body odors. This targeted method preserves biodiversity by attracting only mosquitoes, without impacting other insects such as butterflies, bees, ladybugs, etc. Willo is an alternative to chemical sprays.
Is there a warranty for the Willo mosquito trap?
Yes, the trap is covered by a two-year warranty.
Questions about the operation of the anti-mosquito terminal
How does the device attract and eliminate mosquitoes?
The Willo mosquito trap works on the principle of biomimicry: it imitates human presence by emitting a small quantity of CO2, equivalent to our breathing, and by diffusing an odorant attractant to reproduce our body odors.
Mosquitoes, attracted by the trap, are sucked into the suction mouth and captured in a net, from which they cannot escape as long as the suction flow is maintained. The trap can capture mosquitoes within a radius of around 10 meters. By leaving it running all season, it not only attracts females, but also prohibits their reproduction, thus reducing their population in the desired area.
The Willo trap can operate without the Wiliv mobile app, but its use is optimized thanks to the settings, information and your exchange with the app. We therefore recommend that you download the app (available for Android and iOS) and connect to your Willo trap via Bluetooth.
How to install the Willo trap
To install the mosquito trap, follow these key steps:
- Position the trap correctly: in a shaded area, sheltered from the wind and close to vegetation to maximize its effectiveness.
- Connect the trap to the mains.
- Place the scented attractant and the CO2 bottle, purchased separately, inside the trap.
- Check that the net holder is securely in place.
- Download the Wiliv mobile application and connect the trap via Bluetooth
- Set time slots for CO2 diffusion via the application
When should I install the Willo trap?
Ideally, start at the beginning of the season to catch the first mosquitoes and prevent them from breeding. Of course, you can turn it on at any time during the season!
When to replace consumables
To maintain trap efficiency, consumables must be replaced every 15 days. When the application indicates that the CO2 level is low, it invites you to check the actual remaining level on the dial of the regulator connected to the cylinder.
When the dial indicates 0 bar, replace the cylinder as follows:
- Remove the bottle and its connector from the trap.
- Close the cylinder by turning the valve clockwise as far as it will go.
- Unscrew the pressure reducer fitting using a wrench.
- Connect a new cylinder as for commissioning
What operating hours and why?
As our solution is an in-depth treatment, it is absolutely essential to leave the trap connected 24/7 throughout the season, even during periods of absence.
The time slots for CO2 diffusion are programmed from your smartphone via the mobile app. To ensure optimum trap efficiency, it's important to adapt the time slots to the presence of mosquitoes in your garden. For example, the tiger mosquito is most active during the day and evening. The common mosquito, on the other hand, is generally active in the evening and at night.
As for the fans, they run continuously, which is perfectly normal!
Should I leave my trap running when I’m away for several days?
Absolutely! Since our solution is a long-term treatment, the trap must remain plugged in 24/7, even when you're away—mosquitoes don’t take vacations!
Can Willo be used indoors?
No, the trap must be installed outdoors only.
Does the unit require frequent maintenance?
To avoid impairing the suction capacity of the device, it is important to clean the net and cone every 15 days. It is not necessary to disconnect the trap to perform this operation.
To prevent the mosquitoes still alive from flying away, carry out this operation as close as possible to the fans. You can crush the mosquitoes in your hand before emptying the net and cleaning it if necessary.
It's also essential to keep the inlet of the suction mouth clean: you can clean it gently with a damp sponge or a suitable brush.
Questions about the effectiveness of the mosquito trap
How long does it take to notice a significant reduction in mosquitoes?
It takes about 1 to 2 weeks to notice a significant reduction in mosquitoes.
Where to place the mosquito bollard for maximum effectiveness?
Trap placement is a very important factor in catching mosquitoes. Mosquitoes tend to congregate in cool, damp, shady areas such as hedges and dense vegetation: these are their resting places. We therefore recommend placing the Willo trap close to these areas.
Be sure to position the trap out of the wind, as this can disperse the odours released by the trap. Finally, for effective mosquito population control, place the trap where there are the most mosquitoes in your garden. If this is far from the area you wish to protect, the trap can be positioned between the vegetation and the terrace to capture some of the mosquitoes on their way.
Download our mobile application to help you position your trap!
How many bollards should I install on my property?
If the area to be covered is less than 300 square meters and does not include many obstacles, a single trap may be sufficient to ensure adequate protection. However, if the area exceeds 300 square meters, or includes obstacles such as furniture, walls, etc., it may be necessary to install several traps to guarantee complete coverage.
What is the effective range of the mosquito bollard?
Questions about the Wiliv mobile application
How does the Wiliv mobile application improve use of the device?
Your Willo trap can operate without the app, but its use is optimized thanks to the settings, information and your exchange with the app. That's why we invite you to download the app (available for Android and iOS) and connect to your Willo trap via Bluetooth.
The Wiliv application offers several features:
- It provides the best preventive practices to be applied before installing the trap.
- It helps you choose the best location for your trap in your garden.
- It allows you to set time slots for CO2 diffusion according to the presence of mosquitoes in your outdoor area.
- It provides maintenance tips for looking after your trap and changing consumables regularly.
Can the Wiliv application control several devices simultaneously?
Yes, the application allows you to control several traps.
How do I link my terminal to the application?
To link the trap to the Wiliv application, just follow these simple steps:
- Stand close to the trap
- Activate your location and Bluetooth
Now you can link your trap to the application!
How do I program my remote terminal?
The terminal is programmed using the Wiliv mobile application.
The Wiliv application lets you set time slots for CO2 diffusion. For optimum effectiveness, it advises you to adapt the time slot according to the presence of mosquitoes in your garden.
Can I see when to change the consumables?
The Wiliv mobile application provides an estimate of CO2 consumption, based on the parameters selected, but cannot give a precise value.
Climatic conditions, such as variations in atmospheric pressure and temperature, can vary gas consumption, leading to discrepancies between the application's estimates and the actual values indicated by the dial on the regulator connected to the cylinder. This dial provides reliable information.
When the app warns you that the CO2 level is low, it prompts you to check the actual remaining level on the dial of the regulator connected to the cylinder. This gives you an accurate reading.
What to do in the event of problems
Mosquito trap won't start
- Check that the trap is properly connected
- Check that the plug to which the trap is connected is working.
- Check that the power supply is correctly connected to the electronic board.
- Check the condition of the power cables by disconnecting and reconnecting the trap (check that the LEDs light up correctly). If not, try other extension leads.
My phone doesn't detect the mosquito detector
- Check that Bluetooth and localization are enabled and that all authorizations requested when installing the application have been validated.
- Close/Reopen application
- Close the application, switch to airplane mode, remove airplane mode, restore Bluetooth and location, then try again.
- If the problem persists, uninstall and reinstall the application.
- Check your OS version and compatibility on the store
The net contains no mosquitoes
On some traps, ants can be seen coming and going through the cone. In this case, the ants pick up the dead mosquitoes and insects and carry them back to the anthill. This means that the trap is working very well and the net remains very clean. In the same way, spiders can sometimes be seen chasing living mosquitoes into the net, which also stays cleaner.
If that's not enough to explain the absence of mosquitoes in the nets :
- Check that the CO2 cylinder is open.
- Check that there is still CO2 in the cylinder (level on pressure gauge).
- Check that the pressure gauge is open.
- Check that an attractant is present, in the correct position and still smelling good.
- Check that the cone is clean and that the inlet to the thread is not obstructed.
- Check that the trap is plugged in and running continuously.
- Check that the broadcast ranges are correctly set.
- If all these conditions are met, the trap may not be well positioned.
- Move it to another location close to vegetation, in the shade most of the time, sheltered from the wind, in a mosquito-infested area.
The trap catches but I still have a lot of mosquitoes in my garden
- The trap should be well positioned, but it may be too far from your terrace. Try moving it closer to the area to be protected.
- Make sure you have eliminated all breeding sites in the vicinity of your home. Since mosquitoes can come from as far as 50m away, it's difficult to detect and eliminate all breeding sites, especially if they're in the vicinity of your neighbors. However, the more mosquitoes you can eliminate from your living space, the greater the impact in terms of population and trap catches.
My CO2 consumption doesn't match my application
The application gives you an estimate of CO2 consumption, it can only give an estimate based on the parameters selected. But it can't give a precise, real value. Indeed, cylinder filling, the variability of regulator/valve systems or climatic factors causing variations in atmospheric pressure and temperature influence the way gas consumption evolves. This is why the information provided by the application may not perfectly match that of the pressure gauge on the regulator connected to the cylinder. The pressure gauge, on the other hand, provides a reliable, instantaneous reading of the gas pressure coming from the cylinder. There may be a slight time lag between application and actual consumption, but this should not exceed a few days.
- Check that the black gas line hose is properly clipped to both the regulator and the distributor. If the hose is incorrectly clipped, or has been pulled, and a small leak occurs, the gas will gradually escape without the application being able to see it.
- Make sure the regulator is tight on the cylinder and that there are no leaks (by listening with your ear, putting a little soapy water on the junction).
